Arsenal vs. Hull City – FA Cup Final

This year’s final epitomises the romance of the FA Cup. Arsenal vs Hull City. One of the finalists are a high-class outfit, pushing for Champions League football. The other are recent returners to the top flight of English, operating on a restrictive budget and outperforming their abilities and overcoming the odds to reach Wembley. Of course Hull City enter the fixture as major underdogs, but that is the beauty of the competition – it throws up some rather unusual results.

For Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, this year has followed an all too familiar pattern. Early promise leading generated optimism amongst expectant fans, but was ultimately deflated with a post-Christmas slump. The FA Cup final provides the perennially underachieving North London side with an opportunity to get their hands on their first piece of silverware since 2005. From a season that appeared destined to be a major flop, the potential for Arsenal to finish in the Champions League places and win a domestic trophy could appease frustrated supporters.

Hull City (or Hull Tigers as their extrovert owner wants to name them) have experienced a solid season of consolidation back in the Premier League. Whilst not mathematically out of the woods yet, they very much look like they will retain their place in the top flight for the 2014/2015 campaign, an achievement in itself. The icing on the cake has been booking a place in the FA Cup final by dispatching League One side Sheffield United in an enthralling 5-3 semi-final. The fans will travel down to London more in hope than anticipation, but the prospect of Premier League safety and a big day out would have been snapped up by the vast majority of fans if offered pre-season.

In the league this season it has been one way traffic. Arsenal cruised to a 2-0 victory at the Emirates and more recently, dominated the return leg, finishing 3-0 victors. The Gunners superiority is reflected in the betting odds offered by WBX, and they are available at 1.24 to lift the trophy on 17th May. For those who fancy the upset, Hull City can be supported at 4.40 to complete a fairy tale season and be crowned FA Cup winners.

With the impressive Aaron Ramsey shining since his return from injury, Arsenal will be very difficult to beat. Many Gunners fans will be wondering what might have been this season if they had access to their full roster of players, and Ramsey certainly is a pivotal figure. Despite playing in midfield, he is prolific in front of goal, and may offer some betting value in the First Scorer market.
