Commentary

Uruguay started their campaign by labouring to a 1-0 win over Egypt. Centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez’s late goal secured the win, much to the relief of Luis Suarez, who failed to take his chances. They dominated the game but were found lacking in the final third. Nevertheless, Uruguay got the win they needed so their World Cup campaign remains on track. A win here would give them a spot in the Final 16. Given the obvious quality of Luis Suarez (51 goals in 99 games) and Edinson Cavani (42 goals in 101 games), you’d expect Uruguay’s offence to improve upon their display last week. All the numbers point to Uruguay winning this clash. Uruguay enter this fixture having won each of their last four games to nil. They’ve only lost one of their last ten games and have lost just one of their last nine World Cup group stage games (5-3-1). Uruguay have won five of their last six group stage games and have won each of their three previous World Cup fixtures against Asian opponents. In team news, veterans Cristian Rodriguez and Carlos Sanchez are expected to start after appearing from the bench against Egypt.

Saudi Arabia got their World Cup campaign off to the worst possible start by losing 5-0 to Russia. They failed to achieve a shot on target and looked awful defensively. Saudi Arabia parted ways with two coaches in the lead up to the tournament and it showed, with the side looking naive tactically. Their failed experiment of sending a number of players on loan to Spain also hasn’t helped, with a number of those players failing to get any minutes during the season. The defeat extends Saudi Arabia’s miserable record at the World Cup. You have to go back to 1994 for the last time they won a game at this tournament. Their eleven matches since then have been resulted 0-2-9. Saudi Arabia have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 World Cup games, conceding 37 goals during that stretch. They have been held scoreless in eight of their last 10 World Cup fixtures. In team news, pundits predict that goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais will likely be replaced by Abdullah Al Mayouf. Striker Mohammad Al-Sahlawi was ineffective against Russia so he might lose his spot in favour of Muhannad Assiri, however Al-Sahlawi was prolific for Saudi Arabia in qualifying so management might keep the faith.

It’s hard to find positives for Saudi Arabia in this spot. Uruguay managed to win their opening game despite not playing anywhere near their potential. The likes of Luis Suarez will be looking to make amends for that performance and they will most likely do so, at Saudi Arabia’s expense.

Betting tip: back Uruguay to win to nil at 1.76 (Betfair)
