Commentary

Japan commenced their campaign with a shock 2-1 win over Colombia, who had a man sent off and conceded a penalty in the 3rd minute. The Samurai Blue arguably should have added further goals before conceding a late first half goal from a free kick. They then sealed the deserved win against a tiring Colombia with a 73rd minute goal. Under coach Akira Nishino, who only took over in April, Japan have begun to find their feet. They lost their first two friendlies 2-0 but beat Paraguay 4-2 in their final warm-up game before upsetting Colombia. It was the first time an Asian side has ever beaten a South American opponent at the World Cup. No Asian nation has ever won both of their opening two games at a World Cup tournament before, so Japan will make more history if they win this fixture. They have won two of their three previous World Cup games against African opponents, however they did lose the most recent one 1-2 to Ivory Coast in 2014.

Senegal opened their campaign with a surprise win as well, beating Poland 2-1. They were quarter-finalists in their only previous World Cup appearance in 2002, and are on track to repeat a visit to the knockout stages following their win and Colombia’s defeat to Japan. There was an element of good fortune in their two goals against Poland, but to their credit Senegal took advantage of Poland’s mistakes. They were certainly the better of the two teams in the first half and could have had an even bigger advantage had they taken more of their chances. Senegal also managed to nullify the threat of Poland’s star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Both sides were expected to lose their opening clashes yet now can virtually assure their place in the Round of 16 if they can win this clash. On paper this could be set for a dour draw, given both sides will be content with a point, but this group has already shown that you should expect the unexpected. Senegal have only lost 1 of their previous 12 fixtures and with a stronger squad on paper, I expect them to get at least a point out of this. Some interesting stats for Senegal are over the last four years 19 of their 29 wins were to nil and 17 were by 2 goals, so if they do win the 2-0 scoreline looks the most likely. Senegal have kept 7 clean sheets in their last 12 fixtures and 3 of their last 5 wins were by 2-0 scorelines. Japan’s last 2 defeats were both by 2-0 scorelines.

Betting tip: for the conservatively minded, back Senegal +0.5 in the Asian handicap at 1.36 (Betfair). For those looking for more risk I recommend the Japan 0-2 Senegal correct score at 12.00 (Betfair).
