Commentary

Denmark’s destiny is in their own hands after a 1-0 win over Peru and a 1-1 draw with Australia. They sit second in the Group C standings on 4 points, with France on 6 and Australia on 1.
Against Australia Denmark paid the price for not being more ruthless in front of goal as they failed to capitalise on their 1-0 lead. Failing to win that clash means a defeat against France could see them eliminated if Australia win and the tie breaking rules go against them. Star player Christian Eriksen continues to be a talisman for the side. He set up Denmark’s goal against Peru and was the goalscorer against Australia. In his last 15 games for Denmark he has scored 13 goals and provided 5 assists. Much of how Denmark fare in this tournament comes down to his performances. In team news, Yussuf Poulsen will miss this clash after receiving yellow cards in both prior fixtures. William Kvist remains out after suffering a chest injury against Peru.

France have qualified for the Round of 16 following a 2-1 win over Australia and a 1-0 win over Peru. Their form thus far has been underwhelming, given the quality within the squad, but they continue to get the results they need and know that a draw in this clash would guarantee that they win Group C. They were better against Peru than they were against Australia, with Olivier Giroud’s inclusion in the starting line-up boosting the side as he created opportunities for Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé. Mbappé’s winning goal continues his fine form for Les Bleus.
He has been directly involved in eight goals in his past nine games for France with four goals and four assists. Helping France’s cause is the fact that a draw would suit Denmark nicely as their main priority will be to avoid elimination.

Compare the latest bookmaker odds for Denmark vs. France

With qualification assured and uncertainty over who will come 1st and 2nd in Group D (with whom Group C is paired against in the Round of 16), what will France’s approach be? Will they rest key players and go through the motions, or will they put on an attacking clinic with little pressure on them? Both sides have only lost 1 of their last 12 fixtures, with Denmark going 6-5-1 and France going 8-3-1. With Denmark keen to avoid a bad hit to their goal difference given Australia’s threat, I expect they will keep this tight. France have only kept 2 clean sheets in their last 8 games, so my best guesses for the score are 1-1 and 1-2, but 0-0 isn’t out of the question given Denmark have had 3 goalless draws in their last 9 fixtures. I’m going to make two conflicting bets to cover each scenario.

Betting tip: stake 0.25 units on the 0-0 draw at 6.50 (Ladbrokes) and stake 0.75 units both teams to score at 2.40 (Sportsbet)
