The F3 Derby is arguably the best match-up there could possibly be in the Isuzu Ute A-League. One team from Gosford and the other just down the highway in Newcastle. And while it may not hold the global appeal of a Bayern vs Dortmund or a Manchester vs City type affair, that doesn’t bother them in the slightest. Because what it lacks, it more then makes up for with raw unfiltered passion, in addition to scintillating entertainment.
Who could possibly forget their first ever meeting, an eventual Mariners penalty shootout triumph in the 2005 OFC Club Championship? A broken Andrew Durante leg late on heating things right up! Then further down the track, during the 2007-08 campaign, the Central Coast claimed an almighty Premiership on GD, with Newcastle in 2nd. As they snatched up the prestigious trophy during the final regular season round of the competition. Whilst both teams have certainly had trying times since then, there was still a fun 1-0 win during the opening round of last season going the Mariners way, as Alou Kuol’s sweet, well-placed header in the 43rd minute separated what was a very tense game. Also a free-flowing one, with the Central Coast attempting 18 shots to ‘Newy’s’ 13. While each team also had a shot rattling off the woodwork. What will we get here?
The Mariners were incredibly clinical in their last affair, as they toppled APIA Leichardt in the FFA Cup 6-0! The scoring started in the 8th minute and ended in the 88th, as they now have a final four berth to their name. While prior to that away game, they were at home and bested the Wanderers with ease 2-0. As for the Jets, their last two games have been a dicey 2-1 loss to Macarhur, despite them having a one-man advantage for over 70-minutes at Campbelltown Stadium, while they also thrashed the ‘Nix’ 4-0 at home. With Beka Mikeltadze bagging a double, including a simply stunning freekick.
Given there are only three matches being contested this round due to unfortunate COVID postponements, we should all thank our lucky stars that this wasn’t one of them!

Adelaide have picked up a lot lately under Carl Veart as they commanded a strong point last round against the Victory. However, it was a game in which they arguably should have claimed all three-points due to a simply atrocious no goal-call, while a late red to Isias was also equally as deplorable. Whilst their last league game prior to that saw them thrash Wellington 4-0 at Hindmarsh. Craig Goodwin got on the score-sheet twice in what was simply a masterclass performance from the 5X Socceroo and former Mark Viduka Medal winner. The Forward now has an extremely cool three strikes and 21 shot assists on the season, as the ‘Reds’ finally appear to be gearing for a run at the Top Six.
Meanwhile for Melbourne City, their latest game at AAMI Park was a fun one, as they drew 3-3 against the Wanderers. Despite conceding two goals inside the opening nine-minutes, they fought back to make it even by HT, with an OG to Dimitrios Petratos (16-in) and a sweet Jamie Maclaren strike (36th minute). After that it was Marco Tilio who opened his account for the campaign in the 60th minute, before Western Sydney equalised eight-minutes later via some great play. Travelling to Adelaide is never easy no matter who you are, so this is going to be a great clash!
Goodwin vs Maclaren is the major battle here that should heavily define the outcome of the game. Both Attackers have certainly had their struggles this season, but now they both appear to be picking up in form as they attempt to lead their side to victory. For the incumbent Socceroo and ‘Reds’ veteran, it’ll be all about picking his moments when it’s on for Adelaide, given that City will no doubt try to suffocate them strongly with their relentless attack. As for the opposition man and last seasons leading Men’s scorer, he has to convert his chances better. He was good against Western Sydney, but on the season he has shot 19 off target, in comparison to just the nine on. Given the money Melbourne pays him, he simply has to do better. And this game presents him with the perfect opportunity to do exactly that.
Melbourne should edge out the win here, but don’t be surprised if its close! It will also be interesting to see how the ‘Reds’ fare given they’ve finally started to string some solid results together.

This will be the second time in four days that Sydney and Brisbane have faced off against one another, with Sydney claiming a tight 1-0 win over the Roar on Wednesday night in the FFA Cup at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium. While all that separated the two sides was a solid Elvis Kamsoba hit in the 63rd minute, as Brisbane weren’t afraid in the slightest to square up against last season’s Grand Finalists.
Anthony Caceres was a standout performer for the ‘Sky Blues’, winning 10/16 duels and completing 47 passes. While Alex Parsons had a special game for the Orange opposition, triumphing in 5/11 duels, as well as completing 28 passes. The 22-year-old Attacker is quite the special product and if given time, is more then capable of scoring goals. For the Roar’s NPL youth team, he found the back of the net 11X from 26 appearances. While for the Western Pride he had 14 from 38. And this season in the First Team, despite playing only twice, he still has some credible stats. Included are his 10 accurate passes, good for an 83% accuracy rate. Regardless of how much game time he gets against Sydney, it’s always interesting to monitor the progression of the Roar’s youth products given how highly rated many of them are.
Meanwhile for Sydney, Kamsoba needs to start!!! He has put all his doubters to bed with his amazing start to life with the Sky Blues. He’s scored in the FFA Cup multiple times, while he’s bagged some sweet A-League goals too. And his trademark somersault celebration has become a staple of the fans support at Kogarah. Not to mention he’s pacey and as displayed in the Cup against Brisbane recently, he’s more than capable of turning guarding players inside out. He’s already wrecked Brisbane once this season, so there’s no reason he can’t do it again. That’s provided Steve Corica uses common sense and places him where he needs to be out on the field.
While Brisbane fought resiliently against Sydney, anything but a comprehensive Sky Blues victory here would be a shock. Especially so given the likes of Bobo and Milos Ninkovic only made bench appearances in the Cup.
