For pre-season fixtures I prefer to side with teams that have new managers. The new incumbents tend to place more importance on building momentum in pre-season than established managers. The players too will have extra motivation to impress their new manager as they compete for the starting spots in August.
Manchester United are beginning life under new manager Erik ten Hag. They have already beaten Liverpool 4-0 and Melbourne Victory 4-1 this pre-season.
Crystal Palace begin their second season under Patrick Patrick Vieira. Their squad is actually cut in two at the moment due to so many players failing to meet overseas entry requirements as a result of their vaccination status. One half of the club has remained in England and beat Ipswich over the weekend, while the second half are in Australia, having already lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Singapore on the way. Among the nine senior players not on the overseas tour are Wilfried Zaha, Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze, Christian Benteke, Michael Olise and Jeffrey Schlupp.
With Manchester United having a bit more to play for and the Crystal Palace squad currently cut in half due to covid travel restrictions, I would back Manchester United in the head-to-head at 1.55 (bet365).
