To take advantage of odds before they possibly shorten, these previews are often published before the team sheets are announced. Those who are more risk-averse should wait for the squad lists before wagering. This is especially important given the periodic resting of international players in the lead up to this year’s World Cup.

Season Notes

Total scores remain elevated under the new rules that were designed to speed up play this season. The average total scores in Rounds 1-9 have been 61.0, which is in contrast to 52.4 in 2022. There have been almost eight and a half tries per game this season, compared to six in 2022.

There have been plenty of blowouts this season. Of the 48 games played, 21 were won by 17+ margins.

Chiefs

Chiefs vs. Crusaders

Crusaders

The Chiefs are the best team in the competition at the moment. They are 8-0 for the season, led by their league-leading defence. Their 17 points conceded per game is a full 5 points lower than the next best team. The Chiefs’ average points difference per game is 19 and they have gone 6-1 at the line at home over the last twelve months. The Crusaders bring a 5-game winning streak into this fixture, however their performances haven’t been impressive. They have battled a lengthy injury list all season and had to come back from halftime deficits to see off Moana Pasifika and the Rebels in recent weeks. I would back the Chiefs in the head-to-head at 1.47 (Unibet).

Reds

Reds vs. Force

Force

The 2-6 Reds are too short at 1.33 odds against the 3-5 Force. The Reds have gone 0-6 at the line at home over the last twelve months and they have gone 0-6 at the line as the home favourite against the Force. The Force will be out for revenge following their heavy defeat to the Reds at AAMI Park in Week 2. I would back the Force +9.5 at 1.91 (bet365).
