To take advantage of the odds before they possibly shorten, these previews are published before the team sheets are announced. Those who are more risk-averse should wait for the squad lists before wagering.

Chiefs

Chiefs (4) vs. (5) Reds

Reds

The Chiefs will be out to avenge their regular season defeat to the Reds in Brisbane. They now face off in Hamilton, where the Chiefs have gone 8-2 over the last twelve months. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Reds keep this competitive, however. They have covered the line in their last six games against the Chiefs and they have gone 5-0 at the line as the underdog over the last twelve months. The last time the Reds visited the Chiefs they lost by a 9-point margin. I would back the Chiefs in the head-to-head at 1.24 (Unibet). Those looking for more risk should consider the Chiefs 1-12 at 3.10 (Dabble).

Hurricanes

Hurricanes (1) vs. (8) Rebels

Rebels

If they lose, this will be the last ever game for the Rebels. History is certainly against them. The Hurricanes have gone 7-0 at home this season and they covered the line in five of those seven games. The Hurricanes have won eleven consecutive games against the Rebels and with the data I have at hand it appears they have never lost a home game against the Melbourne side. The Rebels bring a six-game losing streak into this game and they have covered the line just two out of six times as the away underdog this season. Four out of the Rebels’ five away defeats this season were by 13+ margins and six of their last seven away defeats against the Hurricanes were by 13+. I would back the Hurricanes 13+ at 1.20 (Unibet).

Blues

Blues (2) vs. (7) Fijian Drua

Fijian Drua

On paper this looks really one-sided due to the Fijian Drua’s dreadful away record and the Blues’ fantastic home record. The Blues have gone 8-0 at home over the last twelve months and they covered the line in all of those games. The Fijian Drua, meanwhile, went 0-8 in the head-to-head and 2-6 at the line away from Fiji. Seven of the Blues’ eight home wins were by 13+ while six of the Drua’s eight away defeats were by the same margin. Bookmakers are currently offering lines between -23.5 and -25.5, which look pretty accurate based on previous head-to-heads, so I will stay clear of that market and instead back the Blues 13+ at 1.26 (Unibet).

Brumbies

Brumbies (3) vs. (6) Highlanders

Highlanders

This is yet another game that features a side with a dominate home record against a team with a poor away record. The Brumbies have gone 8-0 at home over the last twelve months and they covered the line in six of those games. The Highlanders have gone 2-5 away from home this season and they lost and failed to cover the line in their last two away games. The Brumbies have won three in a row against the Highlanders and their last home win over the southern side was by a 16-point margin. Three of the Brumbies’ last four home wins over the Highlanders were by 13+ margins and four of the Highlanders’ five away defeats this season were by 13+ margins. The Highlanders’ last two visits across the Tasman saw them lose 47-31 to the Rebels and 31-0 to the Reds. I would back the Brumbies in the head-to-head at 1.14 (bet365). Those looking for more risk should consider the Brumbies 13+ at 1.75 (Unibet).
