Bookmaker Margin

The bookmaker margin (overround) is a measure of the bookmaker’s profit margin for an event and is a hidden transaction cost for punters. This profit is how bookmakers finance their services but bookmakers vary in the margins they apply. From a punter’s perspective, the lower the margin, the better. Learn more about bookmaker margins.

BetChamps was not included in our most recent bookmaker margins and markets survey.

Our first impression is that BetChamps’s odds for Australian sports are not as competitive as the major bookmakers, but this does vary from sport to sport. We observed 1.90 lines odds for the NRL, 1.88 lines for the AFL, 1.87 lines for Super Rugby and 1.85 lines for the NBA.

We didn’t have to look far, however, for specific selections that were offered at better odds than the leading bookmakers.

Sports Markets

In March 2025, we observed markets for Australian rules (VFL & AFL), baseball (MLB & Japan), basketball (9 leagues), boxing, cricket, cycling, darts, ice hockey (5 leagues), motor sport (F1), rugby league (NRL & Super League), rugby union (5 leagues), snooker (Players Championship), soccer (22 leagues & competitions) and tennis (ATP & WTA). All of the headline events are covered, while the more obscure leagues (England League 1, ITF tennis etc.) are not.

Some market counts per game we’ve observed are:
A-League: 21
AFL: 57
ATP tennis: 23
EPL: 15
Formula 1: 2
NBA: 24
NBL: 27
NCAAB: 9
NRL: 67
WTA tennis: 23

Same-game multi (SGM) betting is supported on popular leagues plus the tennis.

We have not observed any futures markets.

In-Play Betting

In-play phone betting is not available at the time of review.

Betting Interface

BetChamps navigation screenshot

The BetChamps website employs a responsive design that tailors the layout to suit the screen size of your device. This review will focus on the three-column layout that is displayed on laptops and PCs.

The website uses the ubiquitous three-column layout with navigation on the left, markets and odds in the centre and the betting slip on the right.

The sports and racing categories are listed in an expandable format. Featured sports are listed in their own box, followed by a full list of sports. Upcoming races are displayed across the top of the page.

Breadcrumbs are provided but no search feature is available.

Overall, the navigation is beginner-friendly.

For most sports the list of fixtures includes the head-to-head and either the line or O/U odds for the upcoming fixtures.

For each game, the available number of markets is shown, along with an icon to indicate whether same-game multis are supported.

Selections that are already in your betting slip are highlighted in the odds area.

When a specific game is selected, the markets are displayed in groups with tabs at the top to switch between them. By default the popular markets are displayed. For a sport like the NRL, the other groups are First Half, Second Half, Team Markets, Tryscorer Markets and Other markets.

The betting slip displays both multi and single bet options. A ‘Stake All Singles’ option is provided. This enables you to enter the same stake for all single bets in your slip.

Where promotional boosts and offers are available, they are displayed with icons next to the applicable selections in the betting slip.

Overall, the betting interface is fast, works well and is beginner-friendly.

Horse Racing

BetChamps racing screenshot

The BetChamps racing interface is simple and intuitive. Odds changes are displayed with red and green flashes as they occur. Estimated tote dividends are shown.

Middle Tote is the most commonly offered tote product. Best Tote + Starting Price as well as top fluc are available for win markets on Saturday metro thoroughbred racing.

Generally, fixed odds are only made available on the day of the race.

Same-race multis are supported for thoroughbreds and greyhounds. These support specific runners to finish first or in the top 2, 3 or 4.

BetChamps wasn’t included in our most recent bookmaker margins and markets survey, but on first glance, their fixed odds for midweek Australian racing is highly competitive just before the race jump, but less competitive further away from the race jump. For races due to jump within the next few minutes, we observed races for which BetChamps’ bookmaker margin was fractionally lower than a market leader.

Upsides

  • Australian owned and run bookmaker with over 40 years experience
  • Identity verification is quick and easy
  • Daily specials
  • Withdrawals are processed seven days a week between 8.15pm and 9pm (Sydney Time). BetChamps uses OSKO for all withdrawals, which means you receive the funds quickly.
  • Online chat is available
  • No dormant account fees
  • Same-race multis are supported
  • Same-game multis are supported
  • Look-ahead head-to-head odds are available for the next round of the AFL, on top of the markets for the current round
  • Competitive fixed odds just before the race jump
  • Was easy to find sports selections at highly competitive odds

Downsides

  • Fixed odds for racing are generally only made available on the day of the race
  • Less competitive bookmaker margins for sports

Bottom Line

The emergence of third party betting platforms has enabled long-time on course bookmakers to expand into online wagering, and BetChamps is the perfect example. BetChamps is a small, Australian-owned, NSW-based bookmaker that employs the Punterstech betting platform. The online service is new, but the owner has decades of bookmaking experience. Based on the lineup of promotions and features, we get the impression that racing is the service’s bigger focus, however the sports betting lineup will meet the needs of 95% of punters. The interface is fast, beginner-friendly and feature-packed, with the bells and whistles such as SGMs and SRMs. Those who enjoy fixed odds wagering well in advance of a race will be frustrated, however the fixed odds become highly competitive just before the jump. The sports margins aren’t the most competitive, however we were easily able to find selections at better odds than the leading bookmakers. BetChamps would work well for in portfolio of memberships for odds shopping and for its daily specials.
