Introduction

BetEasy interface

The following is an in-depth review of the betting agency BetEasy. This review covers the history, features, interface, sports & racing markets, upsides and downsides of the service.

This review is part of our comprehensive Bookmaker Reviews section. The Betting Agencies page provides information and reviews for other sports betting agencies that are suitable for Australians. The following details are updated periodically to keep them up to date.

History, Location and Licence

BetEasy is a Northern Territory licensed bookmaker with an office in Sydney. The service was branded as Betezy until September 2014, BetEasy until March 2015, CrownBet until August 2018, and now BetEasy again.

The Betezy brand was originally launched in 2005 by the bookmaker A. Kay, trading as AK Racing. Prior to that AK Racing used the domain bestoddsbet.com, which was launched in 2003. Under prior management Betezy had a chequered past, having previously come under investigation by the Northern Territory Licensing Commission and the ATO.

In March 2014, Matthew Tripp – a former owner of Sportsbet – purchased the assets of Betezy. The service was re-branded as BetEasy in September that year.3

In January 2015, BetEasy announced a joint venture with Betfair, where from January 2015 Betfair would focus purely on exchange wagering and BetEasy would provide fixed odds and Tote products. This venture was a result of James Packer’s Crown Resorts deal with BetEasy owner Matthew Tripp, which effectively gave Crown Resorts control of BetEasy. Crown Resorts owns two-thirds of the joint venture, with Matthew Tripp owning the remaining third of the business. 5

In March 2015 BetEasy was re-branded as CrownBet, named after its majority owner, Crown Resorts. Crown Resorts announced that CrownBet and the Crown Signature Club will launch a loyalty program partnership, with CrownBet members to earn Crown Signature points with every racing and sports bet they place. CrownBet members will be able redeem these points across their choice of Crown experiences, including Crown’s restaurants, hotels, retail precinct and gaming offerings. The points will also be redeemable as CrownBet Bonus Bets in the near future.

In early 2018 The Stars Group Inc become the majority shareholder of CrownBet. The Stars Group is a Canadian online gambling company. It is headquartered in Toronto and is traded on the Nasdaq and the Toronto Stock Exchange.6

In March 2018 William Hill Australia, which includes Centrebet, was sold to CrownBet.7.

In August 2018, William Hill Australia was merged with CrownBet and the two services were re-branded as BetEasy. The new BetEasy website is the same as the old CrownBet service, but with a different colour scheme.

BetEasy is very much focused on the Australian market with only Australian dollar accounts offered. The website is only available in English with decimal odds. BetEasy is an approved betting partner with the AFL, NRL, Cricket Australia and tennis Australia.

BetEasy is Australia’s fastest growing bookmaker, with more than 110,000 newly-registered customers to date in fiscal 2015. BetEasy is the exclusive wagering partner of the AFL for the next five years.4

Betting Interface and Website Layout

BetEasy odds display

When CrownBet was merged with William Hill and re-branded as BetEasy, the new website was launched an identical interface to CrownBet, but with a different colour scheme.

The interface uses the ubiquitous three-column layout with sports listed on the left, markets and odds in the centre and the betting slip on the right. The sports navigation menu is static. When you select a sport, two “Filters” are displayed at the top of the central column. For example, if you select ‘Soccer’ a filters for countries and leagues are displayed.

BetEasy betting slip

When you select a league a list of matches is displayed with head-to-head odds shown. For some leagues, such as the NRL, the Line, 1-12 and 13+ odds are also concisely displayed for each fixture. Below each fixture is a link to view all of the markets for a particular event.

The betting slip functionality is very typical of a modern betting interface. When you add more than one selection to the slip you have the option of submitting single, multi and/or “Extra Multi’s” (such as Doubles, Trebles, Yankee, Lucky15, etc.). When you enter stake amounts the potential returns are automatically displayed. You can toggle the display of the betting slip by clicking on the button at the top right corner of the slip.

Overall, it isn’t the prettiest interface, but the BetEasy website is leaps and bounds ahead of the old Betezy design. The new setup is feature-packed, intuitive and fast to use.

Sports Markets

BetEasy offers markets on a broad selection of sports and the depth of markets per event has improved substantially over the last few years. Typical numbers of markets to expect are: Tennis (ATP/WTA): 9, Baseball (MLB, Japan): 35, AFL: 80+, NRL: 70+, NFL: 40+.

The offerings are certainly enough to warrant using BetEasy as a stand-alone membership.

Horse Racing

BetEasy events display

Thoroughbred racing is available for venues in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Hong Kong and the UK. Harness and greyhound betting is available for tracks across Australia and New Zealand.

Win/Place, Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta and First Four markets are available on most races, while doubles, trebles and quaddies are available each day for most venues.

BetEasy runners display

For most Australian thoroughbred venues, Fixed, Best Tote+ (for Win) and Best Tote (for Place) odds are available. For harness and greyhounds you get Midi Div and for overseas thoroughbreds you get VIC + 5%. Note that Best Tote is the best win dividend of the three TABs while Best Tote+ is the best win dividend of the three TABs and the official Starting Price.

BetEasy offers the Sky Racing channels, which enables you to watch all Australian thoroughbred, greyhound and harness racing live.

Live Sports Betting

Due to Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 1, live online betting is not available for Australians. Australian customers must phone in to bet live. BetEasy’s live sports betting line up is limited, with only NRL, AFL and NFL available at the time of review. If live online sports betting is what you’re after, be sure to check out our survey of betting agencies that offer live online betting.

Upsides

  • Frequent betting promotions
  • $0.01 minimum online wager
  • Access to Sky Racing channels
  • The free bet bonus can be used as separate wagers rather than wagered in one hit
  • The Android and iOS Apps enable members to view AFL matches live
  • International thoroughbred racing
  • Intuitive betting interface
  • Quick to provide markets for upcoming fixtures
  • Rewards program
  • Good range of deposit methods, including Paypal and Apple Pay

Downsides

  • No online in-play betting (due to Australian law)1
  • No longer fully Australian owned
  • BetEasy “reserve the right to close, impose limits on or remove products from Your Account without providing reasons or notice.”
  • Very limited help section at the time of review
  • Higher than average bookmaker margins

Bottom Line

BetEasy seems to change its name more often than I change my linen, but every time it does it seems to get stronger. The service is essentially a re-branded CrownBet following its acquisition of William Hill Australia. Since the merger, BetEasy has increased its promotions offerings as it strives to acquire an even greater market share. BetEasy is easily large enough to work as a sole bookmaker membership and is well worth checking out.
