betr Review

Introduction

Betr review

The following is an in-depth Betr review. The review covers the history, features, interface, sports & racing markets, upsides and downsides of the service.

This review is part of our comprehensive Bookmaker Reviews section. The Betting Agencies page provides information and reviews for other sports betting agencies that are suitable for Australians. The following details are updated periodically to keep them up to date.

History, Location and Licence

betr is the trading name of BlueBet Pty Ltd (ABN 42 607 521 835).1 betr is licensed by the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission.

betr represents the merged entity of BlueBet and the original betr. The original BlueBet was launched in 2015 and ran until August, 2024. It was founded by Michael Sullivan, who is the former Chief Executive of William Hill Australia. Sullivan had led Sportingbet back in 2002 and he was also previously the CEO of Centrebet.2 Rather than rely on a third-party service like most Australian bookmakers, BlueBet was powered by its own cloud-based technology platform. BlueBet Holdings Ltd (BBT) was floated on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in 2021.3

betr was launched in 2022 by Sportsbet and BetEasy founder Matt Tripp. The three founding investors were News Corp Australia, TGW (owned by Matthew Tripp) and the Las Vegas firm Tekkorp. News Corp Australia sold its stake the following year. btr created a stir by offering 100-1 odds on any horse of your choosing to win the Melbourne Cup. They offered the same odds for any team of your choosing to win the AFL and NRL. The bookmaker received a record fine for promoting these offers on affiliated newspapers, radio and television stations.4

BlueBet Holdings merged with betr in 2024. As part of the merger, betr’s owner, the Tripp Group, received a majority of shares in BlueBet.5

In August 2024, BlueBet and betr completed the merger. The merged entity uses BlueBet’s technology platform and the betr brand name. At the time of the merger, betr had a database of 341,000 open accounts and 112,000 active players, while BlueBet had approximately 6,700 active customers.6

betr is an approved betting provider for the AFL, NRL, Cricket Australia, Football Federation Australia, Tennis Australia, PGA Tour Australasia, Basketball Australia, Rugby AU and Netball Australia.

Bookmaker Margin

The bookmaker margin (overround) is a measure of the bookmaker’s profit margin for an event and is a hidden transaction cost for punters. This profit is how bookmakers finance their services but bookmakers vary in the margins they apply. From a punter’s perspective, the lower the margin, the better.

betr was below the survey average for racing margins and slightly below average for sports margins, with an average margin of 5.9% compared to the survey average of 5.8%. betr recorded the (joint) best odds for 22% of the surveyed racing selections. This shows that it would make a useful addition to a portfolio of memberships for those who like to shop around for the best odds.

Sports Markets

betr‘s market offerings per fixture have increased dramatically since we first reviewed the service. betr recorded 50+ markets for the AFL, A-League, EPL, NBA, NRL and State of Origin in our 2023 survey (betr was called BlueBet during that survey).

The markets on offer increase leading up to each fixture. Across the AFL, EPL, NFL and NRL, betr averaged 50+ markets on Wednesday, 60+ markets on Thursday and 90+ markets on Friday.

Of the eleven sports and leagues we included in our latest bookmaker margins and markets survey, betr supported same-game multis for five of them.

While the selection isn’t industry-leading, betr’s range of markets is more than sufficient to make it suitable as a standalone membership for casual sports betting.

In-Play Phone Betting

betr in-play betting screenshot

betr offers in-play phone betting on certain sports.

The minimum stake is $10.

A good range of markets is offered per fixture.

We’ve observed in-play markets for American football, baseball, cricket, football, tennis and basketball.

Betting Interface and Website Layout

betr sports navigation screenshot

The betr website is unique because it runs on the company’s own cloud-based technology platform. It employs a responsive design that tailors the display to suit the screen size of the device you’re using. This review will focus on the three-column layout that is displayed on laptops and PCs.

The website uses the familiar layout of navigation on the left, markets and odds in the centre and the betting slip on the right. The sports navigation displays icons for the most popular upcoming fixtures and races. Racing and sports tabs are closed by default. When you select Sports (A-Z) you are shown the the full line-up of sports. ‘SGM’ logos are displayed to indicate which sports support same-game multis. A search box is provided. This enables you to search for the runner or team you wish to bet on.

The menu doesn’t use a nested link approach. When you click on a sport the centre panel is refreshed to display popular upcoming fixtures for that sport. To view the full list of leagues you then click on the All… tab at the top of the centre column. This approach has become more common with bookmakers in recent years, but it may trip up the odd newcomer who doesn’t spot the ‘All…’ tab.

betr odds display

The markets and odds display has improved over the years. When a league is selected, a list of fixtures is presented, with a number of markets shown per fixture.

Above each fixture is a link to view all markets. A number indicates how many markets in total are available for that fixture. When you click on the link the page is refreshed to show the popular markets for that fixture. Tabs are provided below it to access the remaining markets, broken down by category. A ‘CO’ icon appears next to any market where Cash Out is available. Where applicable, a Same Game Multi tab is provided.

Breadcrumb links are provided at the top of the page. From any fixture you can use these links to return to the league or main page of the sport for which the event applies. If you’re on the odds page for a specific fixture, a drop down link is displayed at the top of the centre column that enables you to jump to another upcoming fixture in the same league.

beter betslip

The betting slip has all of the features you could ask for.

Exotic multi options (“Parlay Bets”) are shown when three or more items are added. Unlike some bookmakers, the stakes you enter into these fields represents the overall stake for that exotic multi, not the stake per leg of the exotic. For example, if you have three items in your slip and enter $10 into the stake for a Trixie (which consists of four bets: 3 doubles and a treble), the total wager is $10, not $40. For those who aren’t familiar with exotic multis, the betr interface provides Info icons that tell you what each exotic multi consists of. You can learn more about exotic multis in our Beginner’s Guide to Multi Betting.

Horse Racing

betr racing interface

The betr racing interface is simple and intuitive.

The racing selection is strong. Australian and international venues are covered for horse, harness and greyhounds. Fixed odds are made available for all races, both domestic and international. Estimated Tote odds are shown for Australian meets.

Tips from a third party supplier are provided for many races. These give a race commentary for key contenders along with four race picks that you can quickly add to your betslip as a box trifecta.

Odds fluctuations and a speed map are also provided. These can be toggled on and off. You can also toggle on and off the display of tote odds. Close to the event start the estimated tote odds are shown.

betr race odds

Below is a list of the betr racing products. Depending on the status of the race meeting, differing products will be available daily as stated on the betr website.

  • SP
  • Best Tote Plus SP
  • Fixed odds
  • Best of three totes
  • Middle Tote
  • Win & Place Tote + 5%
  • Top Fluctuation
  • Best of the Best (best of the three totes or the official on-course top fluctuation)

Flexi betting is available. This enables you to take a Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta, First Four or Quadrella at an outlay to suit a smaller budget.

Same Race Multis are available on certain races. This enables you to back, for example, one runner to win and another runner (or multiple other runners) to run top 2, top 2 or top 4.

Upsides

  • Backed by Matt Tripp and Michael Sullivan, two big names in Australian sports betting
  • Employs its own cloud-based technology platform (most other Australian bookmakers employ a third party betting solution)
  • In-play phone betting is supported
  • Can quickly verify your identity online
  • Broad range of deposit options, including PayPal
  • Flexi betting and same-race multis are available
  • Competitive $100,000 win limits for Australian racing, sports and multi bets
  • Live chat support is available during office hours
  • Cashing out of bets before the event starts is supported
  • Intuitive betting interface with excellent navigation
  • The number of markets per fixture is increasing all the time
  • The range of features grows every time we re-review the website

Downsides

  • Slower to offer certain markets. For example Total Score markets for the NRL are typically made available on Wednesday. This is in contrast to Monday or Tuesday for other leading bookmakers.
  • Their bookmaker margins aren’t industry-leading. For example, 1.90 line odds are used, compared to 1.91 that can be found elsewhere.

Bottom Line

betr will only go from strength to strength now that represents the merger of BlueBet and the original betr. The merger has taken the broad customer base of betr and applied it to the in-house betting technology developed by BlueBet. betr now leads the pack amongst the newer Australian brands that are trying to make inroads into an industry that remains dominated by English and Irish-owned companies. A key difference between betr and the other new brands is it is backed by Matt Tripp and Michael Sullivan, two well-known names in the Australian betting industry. The range of markets and features is growing all the time. Same-race multis and in-play phone betting are among a raft of new features since we last reviewed this service.
